Schervier Pavilion Residents Celebrate April in Paris With a Party

French Lessons, Cream Puffs and a Special Musical Treat

WARWICK (April 20) – The 1952 film, April in Paris, staring Doris Day and Ray Bolger, was about a faux pas.

But on Tuesday, April 19, there was only joie de vivre as residents of Schervier Pavilion, a skilled nursing facility on the Warwick Campus of Bon Secours Charity Health System, celebrated April in Paris with a party.

Residents had an opportunity to learn some conversational French, hear interesting facts about the City of Paris and enjoy refreshment including French cream puffs.

The highlight of the afternoon, however, was a very special musical treat, a one woman and one hour cabaret show by singer and entertainer Stephanie Romm..

She wowed her audience with songs from the 1930's to the 80's including Broadway hits like "All that Jazz' from Chicago, "Cabaret", and the old songs from Judy Garland and others in that era, familiar to the residents.

As evidenced by lots of applause, Romm thrilled her audience with an interactive program, complete with a splash of comedy, charm, and sparkly gown, top hat and boa.
She took the residents on a 75 year musical journey and many joined her in singing those timeless favorites.

According to the Institute for Music and Neuralgic Function, a leading authority in clinical music therapy, numerous studies demonstrate that familiar and likable music can reduce depression while increasing sociability, movement and cognitive ability and decreasing agitation and other behavior problems.

"We publish a monthly calendar that is filled with interesting and entertaining things for our residents to do,´ said Recreational Director Kari Call, a certified therapy recreation specialist, (CTRS).  "Events are held throughout the day as well as on some evenings. Therapeutic recreation is essential to the quality of life and the quality of care for the residents of our facility."

She enjoyed a laugh with one resident when the lyrics involed reunning her fingers through his hair.
