Mount Alverno Resident Rose Marciante Celebrates 105th Birthday

WARWICK, NY (February 12) – With her good memory, alertness and sense of humor, it's hard to imagine that Rose Marciante, a resident at Mount Alverno Center, an adult residence and assisted living program on the Warwick Campus of the Bon Secours Health Care System, just celebrated her 105th birthday.

When Marciante was born in New York City on February 12, 1911, the President of the United States was William Howard Taft. And although motorized apparatus had recently been introduced, most of the fire engines in the City were still drawn by horses.

Marciante doesn't attribute any particular physical reason for her extraordinary longevity even though she never smoked or drank alcohol. But with her deep religious faith she believes it was purely the will of God.

"It's all up to God," she said. "He knows the day you will be born and the day you will die."

As a young lady, Marciante worked in a factory but at age 20 she married Michael Marciante, a subway system employee, and then stayed at home to raise five children. And today she has 12 grandchildren as well as more great grand children than she can remember.

When asked what great changes that occurred during her long lifetime impressed her, She answered, "If you had a radio when they first came out, that was something. Then came TVs, but at first they were too expensive so we waited."

Marciante reported that she enjoys life at Mount Alverno.

"I enjoy the activities and everybody is good to me," she said. "I like living here."

Although it may still seem rare, the fastest growing segment of the population is actually people who have reached the age of 100 and beyond.
