Palliative care is interdisciplinary care that seeks to relieve suffering, strives to ensure physical comfort, attends to practical care needs and improves quality of life for patients/residents with chronic and/or life-threatening illness. Palliative care is an appropriate and medically demonstrated model of care, supported by evidence-based medicine, and is offered simultaneously with all other appropriate medical treatment, including curative and complementary therapies. Our palliative care program attends to the whole person by offering physical, psychological, social and spiritual care to patients/residents and their families. Palliative care involves the full continuum of care, including acute, long term, home, hospice, and adult day care settings to provide seamless supportive services to patients/residents and their families.

On the Warwick Campus, palliative care may start in the acute setting (hospital) once a chronic (life changing) disease or illness is identified. Our streamlined process includes an evaluation by a member of the interdisciplinary campus-wide palliative care team. Next is the institution of palliative care Physician orders and plan of care begins. Education (verbal and palliative care brochures) and support is provided to patient/resident, family and staff as to needs and goals for each patient/resident. Throughout the stay, pain and symptom control as well as emotional and spiritual needs are addressed. Once palliative care is initiated, the plan of care can continue to additional admissions and to all levels of care.

In addition to conventional medicine, we currently offer massage therapy, IGM therapeutic acupressure, guided imagery, and music therapy to our palliative patients and residents with a physician's order.
